Vincent Richel
| Bio |

Vincent was introduced to the arts at a young age by his grandfather, who taught him the basics of drawing, watercolor, and oil painting. He later studied watercolor with a prominent artist in Red Bank, New Jersey. In 1970, his love of nature and traveling took him to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he stayed for three years, working as an under-painter for a well known landscape and portrait artist.

In 1993, Richel and his family settled in Maine. In addition to his paintings, Vincent has expanded his work to include fine woodworking and driftwood furniture. Inspired by the natural beauty and wildlife found in the mountain wilderness of Western Maine, he has created a line of clocks and mirrors, using the natural colors of many different exotic species of woods in his work. The driftwood used in his lamps, tables, and clocks has been gathered from the shores of the many lakes in the area.

"Sculpting with driftwood allows me to use the free forms of character pieces to imitate nature, as in the flow of water creating a drift in the lake. Whether it is a table, lamp, or wall sconce, the flow of each piece completes the circle of energy from where it originated.

The clear, glass tabletops allow the viewer to see through to the driftwood pieces below, as if peering into a still pool of water to discover what lies beneath. To complete each lamp, I use beads and feathers, and wrap the electric cord with suede lacing, enhancing the natural beauty of the driftwood.

More of my works are one-of-a-kind. I enjoy creating new ideas much more than re-creating the same ones over again."

Whether it's a one-of-a-kind piece, or part of his line of works, each work of art is individually hand-crafted by the artist.
